White twinevine

Also called white milkweed vine, Sarcostemma clausum is, in fact, a member of the milkweed family and will exude copius white milky sap if injured. The plant is found in moist situations such as hammock edges and canal banks in central and southern Florida.

Man-in-the-ground

This member of the morning glory family, Ipomoea microdactyla, is found growing the pine rocklands of the Miami Rock Ridge. The plant grows back quickly after fires from a large below-ground tuber and climbs on the dead stems of shrubs.

Longleaf milkweed

Like other species of milkweed, Asclepias longifolia, a wet prairie resident, is a larval host plant for monarch butterflies.

Climbing aster

This fall- and winter-flowering aster, Aster carolinianus or Symphyotrichum carolinianum, is commonly found growing along canal banks and similar habitats.

West Indian lilac

Tetrazygia bicolor is a shrub or small tree found in the pine rocklands and hammocks of the Miami Rock Ridge. The conspicuous yellow anthers add extra color to its floral display.
